Our story

How we got our start Camping Lantern?

When we think of our most basic human needs, we often think of food, water, and shelter. But following a devastating earthquake in Haiti, while we were students at Columbia University, we recognized that light can have an important positive impact on safety and comfort after disasters.

What makes our product unique?

LuminAID is the creator of the world’s first inflatable solar lanterns, designed as a sustainable solution to off-grid light and power around the world. By partnering with humanitarian organizations, LuminAID lanterns have been distributed in more than 100 countries around the world.

Why we love what we do?

LuminAID seeks to make safe light and energy accessible for all. Whether that’s aid workers in Nepal, backpackers in California, or refugees in Syria, we are passionate about sharing safe, sustainable light with those who need it most.

This is one of the best purchases I have ever made for camping! Has ability to dim, hung it on the inside of the tent for great lighting. Also tried charging my phone with it, went from 8% to 80% in about one hour. Completely satisfied. Charging solar does take a while, but I live in the Southwest with plenty of sunshine. Not sure how fast it’d charge with clouds all day.

We bought this for a friend who does mission work in Africa, he said it works great for him. Said it lights up the camp at night and everyone is amazed at it. Loves that he can keep his cell phone charged. We will explore ordering more for him to take on his next trip to hand out.

I bought this to attach to the front of my SUP. We tend to take SUP/kayak day trips in some pretty big lakes. We never plan to stay out after dusk, but occasionally things happen. It’s required that a SUP or kayak, etc. have a light, whistle and PFD at all times. I bought this light to meet the “light” requirement, but I found it to work for SO much more. When we crossed busy water channels, we put it on “blink” mode (even in the day) so that motorized, fast-moving craft were more likely to see us. When we are in remote areas, it’s easy to blow the battery on your phone because it’s constantly searching for cell service; the charger on the light allows us the comfort of knowing that we can charge our phone if it goes dead. There have been a couple times when our day trips have put us out past dusk, and this light has been great – it helps us see and it makes sure that others see us.The different levels of light brightness, plus the “blinking” selection, have come in handy several times. Now that it’s too cold to be in the water, I have attached my light to the back of my backpack so we have an emergency light and charger at all times when we’re in the back country. The light feels like it weighs next to nothing. I highly recommend it.If I could change it in any way, I would suggest two things: 1. It would be great if there was a pocket of some sort to put the charger cable into. I keep it in my dry bag, but a couple of times it’s been accidentally left behind. 2. The charging cable only works with Android products. I’m assuming there’s a reason that an iPhone cable isn’t included, but it would be nice to maybe have a choice when purchasing the item. These suggestions won’t keep me from purchasing the product again, they’re just some user insight.

We would like to recommend LuminAID when you are going to wild; we live in Taiwan and walking into over 3000m mountain for long days. The LuminAID is good assistance, it bring light at night and re-charger my iPhone 8+.

I got this for my grandson, who has taken a teaching job in Thailand, for the monsoon times when power might go out. I had purchased two of the regular ones for my in-law in the Phillipines and when my son and DIL got there, there was an earthquake and power outages. They used them for a week in the hotel.Have two for myself…….need to get one with the phone charger. I highly recommend this product.

First and foremost, I am a HUGE fan of LuminAID and have a number of their products in my Hurricane/Emergency kit. I have 4 different LuminAID products in my “kit” so that in the event of long term power loss, I will have light and power constantly, by using 1 and keeping 3 charging, and rotating them. This product is another great addition to their line, and gives you the ability to keep your cell phone in use, when you have no power. As we have become more and more dependent on our cell phones, this product allows you to keep in touch, as long as the “towers” are still up. Yes, there are plenty on battery back ups on the market, but those are going to run out of juice if you are out of power for any amount of time. THIS product is renewable, as long as you can get sunshine on it!!Think of all the people STILL without power in Puerto Rico, and how a product like this is keeping them able to communicate to their loved ones some 4 months after Hurricane Maria hit.GREAT company. GREAT product.

Our lantern would not charge phone and light lased only 15 minutes. We had purchased it in February, but had not tried it until we went camping in May. I figured we were just out the $50, but I contacted the company about the problem anyway. We couldn’t have had better service. We received an answer to email within 1 hour and a replacement within 2 days ! This one works as advertised. We are very happy with the product !

I just moved into my new place and found out that this 100 year old house has the lights go out in winter at times. I bought this for camping, but thought this would be great in a power outage. It really lights up my entire room. It also has four different brightness settings, and a blinking light for emergencies. I will be ordering another one to keep in my truck. I highly recommend this light, it’s so much more then I thought it would be. Since I bought this I’ve had to use it twice because of power shut down do to fire hazard in our area. This light throws enough light to completely brighten my small craft room, where I bunk down, and charge my phone at night. I have also charged my USB lights from this. I use it at night, charge by the sun while I’m at work running off of generators and come home and plug in when I’m low. Great product.

Gave this as a gift and they have already needed to use it as their power went out. They were able to keep their phones and ipads charged. I’m going to order one for myself!

Truly an amazing product. Very light weight and convenient, plus it can charge your phone! The brightness is really good although my pictures don’t do it much justice. It has different brightness settings, from a high to very low dim and an emergency flashing light option. I saw other people complained about the Velcro, the one I just purchased didn’t come with Velcro, it attaches with clips and held up fine with me throwing my backpacking pack around for a few days.
